1950

Architecture education at HKU begins at Duncan Sloss Building (demolished), with a class of 43 students.

1951

HKU Faculty of Architecture established with Raymond Gordon Brown appointed as its first Dean and Chair Professor.

1955

First Graduating Class of HKU Bachelor of Architecture [BArch] in 1955.

1958

Wallace Gerard Gregory becomes Dean.
Faculty of Architecture amalgamated into Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, under which Department of Architecture was established.

1969

First PhD degree awarded.

1970

5-year BArch reconfigured into 3-year Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies [BA(AS)], and 2-year BArch as a top-up degree.

1973

Our home base moved from Duncan Sloss Building to Knowles Building.

1975

The Building Stream curriculum launched within BA(AS).

1976

H. G. Hollman appointed Head of Department of Architecture.

1977

Eric Lye appointed Head of Department of Architecture.

1978

Department becomes School of Architecture, independent from Faculty of Engineering. Eric Lye appointed Dean, Chair Professor and Head of the School.

Bachelor of Building [B.Building] launched as a one-year professional top-up degree, for BA(AS) Building Stream graduates.
BA(AS) Building Stream replaced by the Bachelor of Science in Building Studies [BSc(BS)].

1980

Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning [CUSUP] established.

1981

The Master of Science in Urban Planning [MUP] launched as a two-year full-time taught postgraduate programme.

1984

Devastating fire at Knowles Building.
School of Architecture elevates to Faculty of Architecture, with Eric Lye appointed Dean. Under the Faculty are Department of Architecture and the newly established Department of Building.

1985

Bachelor of Science in Building Studies and B.Building merge into a 4-year Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying [BSc(QS)] programme.
Master of Science in Construction Project Management [MSc(CPM)] launched.

1987

Department of Building renamed as Department of Surveying.

1988

BSc(QS) superseded by Bachelor of Science in Surveying [BSc(Surv)], as the world's first integrated surveying educational programme.
Master of Urban Design [MUD] launched.

1990

Barry Fegan Will appointed Dean.

1991

CUSUP renamed and reorganised into the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management [CUPEM].

1992

Master of Housing Management [MHM] launched by CUPEM.
Master of Science in Real Estate Development [MSc(RED)] launched by Department of Surveying.
2-year postgraduate BArch reformulated into Master of Architecture [MArch].

1993

Master of Landscape Architecture [MLA] implemented in Department of Architecture.

1996

Department of Surveying renamed as Department of Real Estate and Construction [REC], launching Postgraduate Diploma in Surveying (Quantity Surveying) [PgD(QS)] and Postgraduate Diploma in Real Estate Development [PgD(RED)] in the same year.

1997

Master of Arts in Transport Policy and Planning [MATPP] launched in collaboration with Department of Geography and Department of Civil Engineering, providing the expanding transport sector in Hong Kong then with a steady supply of well-trained professionals at the executive level.

1998

MSc(RED) renamed into Master of Science in Real Estate [MSc(RE)].

1999

Thomas Kvan appointed Dean.

2000

Master of Science in Conservation [MSc(Con)] launched by the newly established Architectural Conservation Programme [ACP], under the Department of Architecture.

2001

HKU Surveying Alumni Association formed.
Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Design and Management [MIDM] launched by Department of Architecture.

2002

Chau Kwong-wing appointed Dean.
PgD(RED) and PgD(QS) incorporated into MSc(RE) and MSc(CPM), respectively.

2006

Ralph Lerner appointed Dean.

2008

MUD and CUPEM form into the Department of Urban Planning and Design [DUPAD].
Division of Landscape Architecture [DLA] also established, under Department of Architecture.
Shanghai Study Centre opened in the same year.

2009

Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies [BA(LS)] launched by DLA.

2010

MIDM transferred to REC.

2011

David Lung appointed Interim Dean, following the passing of Ralph Lerner.

2012

Bachelor of Arts in Conservation [BA(Con)] launched by ACP.
Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies [BA(US)] launched by DUPAD.

2013

Chris Webster appointed Dean.
Ronald Coase Centre for Property Rights Research [RCCPRR] established at REC.

2016

MIDM revamped into Master of Science in Integrated Project Delivery [MSc(IPD)].

2019

Department of Architecture launches the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Design+ [BASc(Design+)], and the three-year Master of Architecture (Design) [MArch(Design)] programmes.

2020

Master of Science in Urban Analytics [MUA] launched by DUPAD.
Closure of Shanghai Study Centre.

2021

ACP dissolves. BA(Con) merged into BSc(Surv) of REC, and MSc(Con) restructured into DLA.

2022

Master of Science in Urban Design and Transport [MUDT] launched by DUPAD.

2023

MSc(IPD) renamed into Master of Science in Digital Management of Built Asset [MSc(DMBA)].
MHM renamed into Master of Urban Studies and Housing Management [MUSHM], offering the Urban Studies Stream and Housing Management (Professional) Stream.
Department of Architecture launches the Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design [MSc(AAD)] as a design-focused taught postgraduate programme.

2025

Yung Ho Chang appointed Dean.
HKU Urban Systems Institute and DUPAD co-organise the Master of Digital Urban Management [MDUM] as a one-year full-time programme.
The Faculty celebrates its 75th anniversary in Academic Year 2025-26.
