The documentary Yung Ho Chang: In Love with the Tangible World takes viewers on a journey through the everyday architecture of Sweden, as the Chinese architect and educator ponders the fundamental question: “What is architecture?”
In this film, you will see works by Nordic masters including Sigurd Lewerentz, Peter Celsing, Johan Celsing, and Erik Gunnar Asplund, offering reflections on architectural thinking and the relationship between materials, space, and craftsmanship.
This event presents the full documentary prior to its public release, and is part of the Faculty’s 75th Anniversary programme.

Over the past 40 years, China has undergone an extraordinary wave of urban development, reshaping its cities and redefining its architectural landscape. Professor He Jingtang has been at the forefront of this transformation, both as an architect and as a scholar, helping to pioneer a path of architectural innovation rooted in Chinese cultural identity. His theory of “Two Perspectives and Three Characteristics” establishes a framework that unites practice, teaching, and research, and has become a cornerstone of contemporary Chinese architectural thought.
In this lecture, Professor He will delve into the principles of his design philosophy through a selection of his most notable works. He will share insights into the creative process that has both shaped his career and contributed to the evolution of China’s urban environment.

Despite the fact that a great many significant buildings have been produced by architects practising in China in the past decades, contemporary Chinese architecture is still largely unknown globally, outside a small circle of observers and academic institutions. This symposium is the first of a series at the University of Hong Kong, with a panel of scholars and practitioners, both international and local, to dig, dissect, discuss, and debate about the conditions and implications of this relatively nascent architectural phenomenon.
The subject of contemporary Chinese architecture inevitably brings up a Pandora’s box of questions, led by the one of: how is ‘contemporary Chinese architecture’ defined? While this forum is meant to keep a long-waited conversation open, the following key-words/phrases are suggested as some of the points of departure:

Architecture as a discipline has a clearly defined core that focuses on the intervention in the tangible environment while is rhizomatically open on the periphery, informed by knowledge from the arts, engineering, science and social science, among other fields.
Due to this unique characteristic, the education of architecture prepares students to embrace the real world by entering a myriad of design professions, as well as venturing into many uncharted territories incidentally, or not?
