Actors and Auteurs: Construction and Interpretation in Architecture
12 MAY 2026 | 6:30-8:00pm
KB419 Lecture Hall, 4/F Knowles Building, HKU
Our experience watching film has taught us to interpret the choice of actors, the influence of the script, the effects of music and cinematography. We identify auteurs, from screenwriters to directors, and read in the actors’ histories. Our experience is composite. With architecture this is difficult: much of the creative content is hidden. History and criticism have not kept up either. Engineers are not taught their craft’s history while much of architecture history is handicapped by the invisibility of structure and systems and the lack of heuristic means. This lecture is an effort to elucidate this and point to some ways to improve critical practices.
This lecture is co-hosted by the Faculty of Engineering.
